Beyond the rigor and relevance of teaching to the national music education standards, the tangible evidence of all that is learned in our classrooms is an incredible tool for showing why music is an interdisciplinary essential in American education. Making connections to 21st Century Skills and Common Core Standards aligns teaching across the curriculum through a musical lens. Finding creative ways to make this evident is key, and involving students in making a Presidential Podcast focused on music is both innovative and fun.

Back to school time is not just a busy time for teachers, students and parents, but also for those of us on the business side of things who serve education in our businesses.

The NAMM Foundation’s 12th annual Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) survey acknowledged 179 communities in 32 states – including 172 school districts and, for the first time, seven individual schools – for their support and commitment to music education in schools.

Now more than ever before it is vital for all music teachers and community members to be proactive about promoting the benefits of having a music program in their schools. In Pennsylvania, as in many other states, any subject not currently being tested and assessed through Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) or a similar body may be cut or even eliminated from the school curriculum during times of budget constraint.
